December 26, 2024

Following the 2022 presentation of Immersive Angkor at the ICC-Angkor and the MoU signed with APSARA National Authority earlier this year, the project continues to advance. Recent developments include ICONEM’s latest scanning mission, finalizing the construction study, and plans for a scientific curatorship.

Observing Preservation Efforts at ICC-Angkor

The 31st Plenary Session of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC-Angkor) was held on December 13–14, 2024, at the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Hotel in Siem Reap. Presided over by H.E. Dr. PHOEURNG Sackona, Cambodian Minister of Culture and Fine Arts and Chairperson of the APSARA National Authority, the event was co-chaired by H.E. Mr. Jacques PELLET, French Ambassador to Cambodia, and H.E. Mr. UENO Atsushi, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia. Discussions focused on restoration and preservation efforts at Angkor.

Confluences CEO Soreasmey KE BIN attended as an observer and reconnected with partners, including ICONEM CEO Yves UBELMANN, who presented on the use of 3D documentation technologies for cultural heritage. UNESCO World Heritage Centre Director Lazare ELOUNDOUN was also present.

Soreasmey KE BIN shared, "It is an honor to participate again at the ICC and witness the ongoing efforts to preserve the Angkor Archaeological Park. We hope to contribute by promoting education about Angkorian civilization through partnerships like ICONEM."

ICONEM’s December Mission in Cambodia

At the beginning of December, ICONEM conducted its second mission for the Immersive Angkor project. The team focused on 3D photogrammetry to capture significant sites, including Angkor Wat and Phnom Kulen, and spent several days in Phnom Penh doing additional work. These scans are critical to creating an accurate immersive experience while preserving Cambodia’s heritage.

Christopher VARIN, Siem Reap Branch Manager at Confluences, commented, "My role is to ensure our partners complete their work without delays or issues—a goal successfully met during this mission.

Advancing Immersive Angkor

Although no specific discussions about the Immersive Angkor project occurred at the ICC, the project is progressing well. The construction study has been finalized, and steps are underway to establish a scientific curatorship to provide academic and cultural oversight.

Scheduled to open in late 2025, Immersive Angkor aims to combine technology and cultural heritage, offering visitors an engaging and educational experience.

Supporting Heritage Preservation

Confluences actively supports the Immersive Angkor project by facilitating logistical operations, fostering collaboration between partners, and contributing to broader cultural preservation efforts.
