Confluences and our resident companies had the opportunity to visit both Heineken brewery, one of the largest in Cambodia, and the biomass project attached to it.
More than 40 of our employees and residents made the trip to the southern part of the capital city, and gathered afterwards for a social barbecue at a farm to table venue.
Our team was presented with the different types of beers brewed at Heineken, and had the opportunity to firsthand witness their production lines, as well as their sustainability and water treatment processes.
The company is targeting net zero carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2040. Part of this value chain is well-known among some of you, as Confluences was heavily involved in setting-up the largest biomass power plant in Cambodia.
Designed to contribute to the Kingdom’s emission reduction efforts, the plant opened in September 2022 as a joint-venture between Heineken and Berkeley Energy Commercial and Industrial Solutions (BECIS), with capital investment of $5.8 million. The biomass facility is burning rice husks from the nearby Prey Vang province to generate steam that supplies 100% renewable thermal energy (heat) to Heineken Cambodia’s brewery. By switching to biomass energy, Heineken Cambodia expects to reduce up to 60% of its CO2 emissions in its production.
For our team, it was a fantastic and insightful opportunity to reunite with the BECIS Cambodian team - led by Country director Neil Allen - as they were our resident company for more than a year and both teams worked closely to enable this project to become a reality.
It was an enjoyable afternoon and enabled the teams to get to know each other better, learn more about one of our key projects, and also understand Heineken’s sustainability model.
Thanks to Heineken and BECIS management for the warm welcome.
